Computer Science students currently enrolled in Computer Science courses requiring lab work, as well as students approved by faculty members, may be granted access to the labs.

The labs are under 24-hour surveillance. Anyone found in violation of the rules or attempting to damage or remove equipment will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and may be expelled from the University according to the Student Code of Conduct.

The computer labs are a place where people can use reliable, quality equipment to work on assignments in a clean, comfortable environment. To ensure the quality of our labs, students must follow these rules and regulations:

  • Do not give away the lab door code. Only students currently enrolled in computer science courses requiring lab work or students approved by faculty members to have access are allowed in the lab. All other visitors must be approved by the Department Chair.  Giving the lab door code to someone else is a violation of these policies. You will be held responsible for any damage or loss that occurs if you do so, including prosecution and possibly expulsion from the University.
  • All University software license agreements and UTS policies must be followed, including (but not limited to) not using software for commercial profit nor creating and maintaining inappropriate material on the machines.
  • Do not tamper with lab machines or equipment. Tampering includes unplugging peripherals from the workstations, unplugging the workstation from the network or electricity, turning off, rebooting, or otherwise suspending the use of the workstation. Remember that tampering also affects users who are logged into that workstation remotely and may cause damage to data as well as to the workstation. Those found tampering with workstations will have their accounts suspended and potentially revoked.
  • If a class is scheduled in the lab, users not in the class must have permission from the instructor to be in the room. Students registered for the class have preference and non-registered students must not disturb an ongoing class.
  • If there is contention for the machines, the following priority is assumed:

            1. Class usage
            2. Working on class projects and independent studies or research
            3. Other usage such as playing games

  • Audio must be kept very low. Headphones may be required for all students by an instructor.
  • Loud behavior is not acceptable except during special events such as approved LAN parties by the Department Chair.
  • No food or drink are permitted in the lab except by permission from the Department Chair.
  • Both the doors and windows of the labs must remain closed at all times and the air conditioner units left on. Whomever is the last to leave the lab must make sure the door is closed.
  • Help keep the labs clean by disposing garbage properly. If you have unwanted paper, put it in the recycling bin rather than leaving it around the workstation or printer.
  • System administration holds no responsibility for any information such applications, software, etc., saved or installed on lab workstations. Workstation hard disks are cleaned off periodically.
  • Printing on lab color printers requires approval by the Department Chair.
